Maria Turik

I was born in East Siberia in 1982 and grew up on the smoking ruins of the Union.

My first University degree is in Linguistics. The imprint of language studies, its accurate underlying structures, poetics and philosophy reveal in my artistic practice to date. I studied Fine Arts at Burg Giebiechenstein Academy, Halle, and at Weißensee Academy of Art Berlin.

In my current work, I’m combining sculptural elements with movement and sound, creating performances and installations for the stage and open-air spaces. A sand dune or a water surface in the city becomes a piece’s starting point or its integral part.

One of the important topics of my work is the birth of non-verbal sign systems and other ways to perceive and understand one another. One possibility to do this can be a thin cord stretched over a gigantic quarry pit, an orderly knot appearing out of a messed up heap of fabrics or letters containing nothing but air.
