Located next to the main building is a small, four-storey watchtower of the former border troops of the GDR. It is one of three remaining watchtowers of the Berlin Wall in the city area. Three days before the official end of border controls on 1 July 1990 it was occupied by the artist and singer-songwriter Karl Winkler and was subsequently rededicated as a “Museum of Forbidden Art”. After his death in 1994, the association “Museum der Verbotenen Kunst e. V.”, continued to operate until 2000, organizing exhibitions and events in the watchtower. Since 2004 it has been under the care of FLUTGRABEN e.V. and the building has hosted several exhibitions, talks, screenings, and residencies. For more information: The Watch
