Critical Friends is a series of conversations hosted in the framework Inverse Institution. Between 2011 and 2015 we as Inverse Institution aimed to develop a collective practice of institutional critique in order to rework basic formats of artistic production. In retrospect we began to question the strategies of collective and curatorial institutional critique that we had employed and developed within Inverse Institution. The series Critical Friends is a result of this critique and invites perspectives by people who have initiated practices, projects and spaces which centered critical analyses of existing power structures, discrimination and exclusion in the arts and cultural work from the start. Critical Friends designates the often informal request towards colleagues to accompany and support transformative processes within institutions with critical feedback. The title Critical Friends also points at the contradiction that perspectives of people, who critically engage with power and discrimination are often met without institutional obligation and consequence.
